The Roman Forum of Philippopolis in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, stands as an impressive testament to ancient Roman urban planning. As the largest forum complex in the country, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the public life of the former metropolis.

History+

Construction of this significant forum began towards the end of the 1st century. During this era, a comprehensive new urban plan was implemented in Philippopolis, as the city was then called, which included a central square modeled after Roman examples. The entire complex spanned an area of 11 hectares. The main square was surrounded on three sides by shops of identical size, while public buildings were located to the north. Also north of the forum was an odeon with a capacity of 300 to 350 seats. This structure initially served as the seat of the city administration before later being converted into a theater.
