Ancient City Peiraieus (Πειραιεύς)-Theatre

The name Peiraieus, associated with "ferryman" by ancient authors, originally referred to the mountainous peninsula southwest of Athens. As early as the 6th century BC, a castle stood on Mounychia Hill. Themistocles recognized the strategic importance of the three deeply indented harbors in 493 BC and designated them as the port of Athens, which he had surrounded with walls. Between 461 and 456 BC, the famous Long Walls were built, connecting Piraeus with Athens. During the time of Pericles, Hippodamus of Milet designed the city with a right-angled street network and expanded the harbors with colonnades and ship sheds. After its destruction in the Peloponnesian War, Piraeus quickly re-emerged as a trading port. Between 347 and 323 BC, Philon's Arsenal was built, but it was burned down by Sulla in 86 BC along with other port facilities. The ancient port city was divided into the sub-harbors of Kantharos (commercial port) and Zea and Mounychia (military ports).

The ancient city of Peiraieus is located in Piraeus (Πειραιάς) in the Attica region, Greece, at an elevation of approximately 11 meters above sea level.
