Ancient City Miletus
The ancient city of Miletus, once a flourishing center on the west coast of Asia Minor, is today an impressive ruin site in Turkey. Famous for its rich history and its role as a significant maritime power, it offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into past civilizations.
History+
The settlement of the area around Miletus dates back to the Neolithic period. In the Bronze Age, a Minoan and later Mycenaean settlement developed here, mentioned as Millawanda in Hittite texts and destroyed by the Hittites around 1320 BCE. After another destruction around 1100 BCE, a new foundation by Ionian colonists occurred in the 11th century BCE. From the 8th century BCE, Miletus rose to become a leading Greek polis, founded numerous colonies, and established itself as an important trading port. After its subjugation by the Lydians and Persians, the city was conquered and destroyed by the Persians in 494 BCE during the Ionian Revolt. However, it was rebuilt and experienced a renewed flourishing in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, though it lost its former importance as a provincial capital to Ephesus.
