The ancient city of Eleutheropolis, also known as Betogabri, represents a fascinating testament to past civilizations. Located in modern-day Israel, near the West Bank border, it was once an important center on the historic route from Ashkelon to Jerusalem. History+
Settlement in the area around Bet Guvrin began as early as the 6th century BC. Originally, the site was a neighbor of the Edomite capital Maresha. Both cities fell to the Maccabees approximately 400 years later. Under Roman rule, the settlement gained particular significance. In 202 AD, Emperor Septimius Severus granted the city privileges and the name Eleutheropolis, meaning “free city.” In the following centuries, Eleutheropolis served as the administrative seat of the largest Roman district in Palestine. A Crusader castle named Gibelin, built on this site in the 12th century, was conquered by Saladin in 1187.
