Ancient City Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola-Arch of the Sergii

The Roman colony Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola was established after its conquest by the Romans in 177 BC. Around 30 BC, after the Battle of Actium, the Arch of the Sergii was erected by Salvia Postuma Sergia as a private monument to her three brothers. It was originally located in front of the Porta Aurea, the Golden Gate, which was demolished in 1829. In the 5th century, following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Pula fell under Ostrogothic rule, before Emperor Justinian reconquered the city for the Eastern Roman Empire in the 6th century and developed it into an important naval base. Although the Slavs advanced into Istria in the late 6th century, they could not capture the coastal cities, including Pula, thus preserving the Roman urban culture. Later, Pula was nominally Byzantine but de facto independent, while the hinterland belonged to the Frankish Empire.

The Arch of the Sergii is located in Pula, in the Istrian County (Istarska županija) in the Jadranska Hrvatska (Adriatic Croatia) region, Croatia, at an elevation of approximately 12 meters above sea level.

Visitors can today explore the Roman arch and admire its ancient construction. As it originally stood in front of a city gate, the arch is decorated on only one side.
