Ancient Town Cabyle

The region around Cabyle was already settled in the second millennium BC, as evidenced by Neolithic finds. The area was also inhabited during the early Iron Age, from the 10th to the 6th century BC. In 341 BC, Cabyle was fortified by Philip II of Macedon and elevated to a polis. After his reign, the city was under Alexander the Great and later under Lysimachus. Around 280 BC, it fell under the control of the Thracian Odrysian kingdom. Its importance declined in the second century BC due to a campaign by Philip V of Macedon. Later, Cabyle came under the control of the Celtic king Kauaros. The city minted coins for local Thracian rulers such as Spartokos and Sostokos, as well as for the Celt Cavarus. In 72 BC, the Roman general Lucullus conquered the city. Cabyle was one of the largest and most important cities in Thrace. In the 4th century AD, it became an episcopal see before being destroyed by the Avars in the 6th century AD. In the 9th century, the First Bulgarian Empire integrated the ruins and established a new settlement.

The ancient city of Cabyle is located in the village of Kabile, which belongs to the Tundzha Municipality in the Yambol Province in Bulgaria. It lies at an elevation of approximately 145 m above sea level.

The remains of the ancient city are now accessible to visitors and can be explored. The partially preserved and restored architecture provides an impression of its former grandeur.
