Ancient City Assos-Theatre

The settlement of the Assos rock dates back to the Bronze Age. In the 7th century BC, the city was founded by Methymna on Lesbos. Although Assos was a member of the Delian League, it played no major role in the Greek-Persian conflicts of the 5th and 4th centuries BC. It only gained significance during the Satraps' Revolt around 366 BC, when the rebellious satrap Ariobarzanes sought refuge here. From approximately 360 BC, Assos was under the rule of Eubulos and later Hermeias, a period during which Aristotle also lived there. Between 334 and 241 BC, the city belonged to the empire of Alexander the Great and the subsequent Seleucids. From 241 to 133 BC, Assos was part of the Attalid kingdom of Pergamon before being incorporated into the Roman Empire. In Byzantine times, Assos was an episcopal see. In 1306, the Greeks briefly defended the fortress of Assos against the Ottomans, but soon after, the settlement fell into their hands.

The Ancient City of Assos Theater is located in Behram, in the Çanakkale district, within the Marmara region of Turkey. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 111 meters above sea level.
