Ancient city of Alba Fucens

Originally a settlement of the Aequi, Alba Fucens came under Roman rule in 303 BC and was transformed into a Roman colony. Its strategic importance on the border with the Marsi territory had been recognized earlier, when the city withstood a Roman siege in 458 BC. During the Second Punic War, Alba Fucens refused to support Rome, leading to sanctions. Subsequently, the city served as a place of exile for important state prisoners, including kings like Syphax of Numidia and Perseus of Macedon. Despite attacks during the Social War, Alba Fucens remained loyal to Rome. The Imperial era marked a flourishing period, during which the city likely had up to 30,000 inhabitants. In the 9th and 10th centuries, Alba Fucens was destroyed by Saracen attacks.

The ancient city of Alba Fucens is located near the small village of Albe in the province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo region, Italy. It stands at an elevation of approximately 946 m above sea level.

Visitors can explore the ruins of Alba Fucens today. Particularly well-preserved is the nearly three-kilometer-long city wall made of polygonal masonry, with its three city gates. Excavations since 1949 have uncovered the city center, including a forum larger than those of Ostia Antica or Pompeii, a basilica, thermal baths, and a large sanctuary of Hercules. A theater from the 1st century BC and an amphitheater from the time of Emperor Tiberius are also visible. The ancient Temple of Apollo was converted into the early Christian church of San Pietro, which was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1915.
