Werdenberg Castle, majestically situated on a hill overlooking the the valley, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Switzerland. Its origins date back to the 13th century, when it was built by the Counts of Werdenberg.

History of the Castle

The Counts of Werdenberg built the residence in the 14th century. Later, ownership passed to the Counts of Sargans.

In the 15th century, the castle was acquired by the city of Lucerne, which used it as an administrative center. During this period, the castle underwent several renovations and expansions, which, however, preserved its original character.

Architectural Features

Werdenberg Castle is characterized by its impressive keep, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. The castle complex also includes a chapel with valuable frescoes, a knight's hall, and several residential buildings.

The defensive walls and towers are also well preserved and bear witness to the castle's former strategic importance.

The Castle Today+

Today, Werdenberg Castle is a popular museum that gives visitors an insight into medieval life. Regular exhibitions and events are held, attracting numerous history enthusiasts.

The castle is also a popular venue for weddings and other celebrations, offering a unique historical setting.
