The first documented mention of the fortress at Sugenheim (Gothic moated castle) dates back to 1376. In 1386, ownership passed into the hands of the von Seckendorff family and remained with the von Seckendorff-Aberda family until 1972. In 1525, the castle was largely destroyed in the Peasants' War and rebuilt between 1526-29. In 1806-07, the four corner towers were reduced in size. From 1981-83, the castle was renovated.
