Old Castle (Grevenbroich)

The Old Castle in Grevenbroich dates back to a high medieval, water-encircled circular castle. The castle was replaced between 1561 and 1577 by a new three-winged building. Today, only the main building (palas) remains, which has been supplemented by two modern extensions. The halls are used for events and meetings.

From the circular castle to the moated castle

The origins of the Old Castle in Grevenbroich lie in a circular castle from the High Middle Ages, which was probably built in the 12th century. This early castle served to secure the ford over the Erft and to control the surrounding area. It was a typical motte-and-bailey castle, consisting of a central mound with a tower and a surrounding palisade. A moat provided additional protection.

Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly expanded and converted. In the 14th century, it was transformed into a moated castle, with the wooden palisades being replaced by stone walls. The castle became the seat of the Lords of Grevenbroich, a powerful noble family in the region.

The Renaissance Castle

In the mid-16th century, the castle was extensively rebuilt under the direction of the then lord, Wilhelm von Bronkhorst. Between 1561 and 1577, the medieval complex was replaced by a magnificent three-winged Renaissance castle. The new building reflected the architectural trends of the time and was characterized by its elegant facades, large windows, and decorative elements.

The Renaissance castle consisted of a main building (palas) and two side wings that enclosed an inner courtyard. The palas housed the representative rooms, including a large hall, living quarters, and a chapel. The side wings contained utility rooms, stables, and servants' quarters.

Destruction and Reconstruction

During the Cologne War (1583-1588) and the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the castle was severely damaged. Parts of the building were destroyed, and the complex fell into disrepair. In the following centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was only partially rebuilt.

In the 19th century, the castle was acquired by the municipality of Grevenbroich. Extensive renovation and reconstruction measures were carried out, but only the main building (palas) was preserved in its original form. The two side wings were demolished and replaced by modern extensions.

Today, the Old Castle in Grevenbroich serves as a cultural and event center. The historic halls are used for a variety of events, including concerts, exhibitions, lectures, and weddings. The castle also houses the municipal archive and a local history museum.
