The Old Palace+
A turning point in the city's history was the relocation of the residence from Plassenburg above Kulmbach to Bayreuth in 1603 by Margrave Christian, son of Elector Johann Georg of Brandenburg. The first Hohenzollern castle, built between 1440 and 1457 under Margrave Johann the Alchemist, the predecessor of today's Old Palace, was extensively expanded and rebuilt. In 1753, the north wing was destroyed by a fire caused by the Margrave himself and subsequently rebuilt. During the Second World War, the castle was destroyed by senseless bombing and rebuilt in the 1950s.
