At the foot of the famous Athenian Acropolis, on its southern slope, lies the Dionysus Theatre. This ancient site is considered the birthplace of Greek drama and theatre in general, named after Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy.
History+
The Dionysus Theatre, which originated as a sacred building in the 5th century BC, was initially a simple structure with a ground-level orchestra and a wooden skene, with spectators sitting on a natural slope. Around 410 BC, the first wooden seating rows were added. The theatre received its current stone form around 330 BC with stone seats, a permanent stage building, and an orchestra framed in marble. Here, the famous tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides premiered. In 1863, the theatre was excavated by the Archaeological Society of Athens and documented by Ernst Ziller.
