The "Alte Mühle" (Old Mill) in Schmalkalden+
Location and History+
The "Alte Mühle" is located in the historic old town of Schmalkalden, directly on the Schmalkalde river. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, with the first documented mention as early as 1324. Over the centuries, the mill served various purposes, including grain milling and later as a sawmill.
A predecessor building was destroyed in 1688. A new building was constructed in 1695. The owners were the Barons Willich, known as von Pöllnitz.
Architectural Features+
The current building largely dates from the 17th century and presents itself as a stately half-timbered house with a high stone plinth. Particularly striking are the ornate carvings on the half-timbering and the historic mill wheel on the river side, which was reconstructed in recent years.
Current Use+
Today, the "Alte Mühle" no longer serves its original purpose. After extensive renovation, it now houses a restaurant and a small museum dedicated to the history of the mill and the town of Schmalkalden. The premises are also used for cultural events and private celebrations.
Significance for Schmalkalden+
The "Alte Mühle" is an important historical monument and a popular photo motif in Schmalkalden. It contributes significantly to the charm of the old town and is a living testimony to the town's rich history. Its preservation and current use make it a vibrant cultural asset that attracts both locals and tourists.
