Echterhaus Manor

The Echterhaus, a magnificent Renaissance building in Würzburg, is one of the city's most important historic landmarks. Its rich history and impressive architecture make it a fascinating testament to bygone eras.

The Echterhaus was built in 1570 as the city residence of the Lords Echter von Mespelbrunn, replacing the "Zum Grasemann" court mentioned in 1340.

The Echter family, an influential noble family from Franconia, played a significant role in the history of Würzburg. Their most famous representative, Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, was Prince-Bishop of Würzburg from 1573 to 1617 and left a lasting mark on the city through numerous building projects and reforms.

The Echterhaus served the family as an urban base and represented their wealth and status. It survived the centuries largely unscathed, including the devastating bombing of Würzburg in 1945, which destroyed large parts of the city.

The Echterhaus is an outstanding example of German Renaissance architecture. Its striking facade, adorned with rich ornamentation and sculptures, immediately catches the eye.

Facade and Courtyard
