Varensell Abbey

Monastery (active)

Varensell Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in North Rhine-Westphalia, is a spiritual place with a long tradition. Located in Gütersloh, this monastery is characterized by its historical development and its close connection to the local parish community.

History+

Varensell Abbey was founded in 1902 as a priory by Benedictine nuns of the Most Holy Sacrament, whose origins lay in the Maria Hamicolt monastery. In 1948, Varensell achieved the status of an abbey, thereby ending its original affiliation with the Benedictine nuns of the Most Holy Sacrament. A deep bond between the convent and the parish community characterized its development, which was also reflected in the shared use of the parish and abbey church. A new church building was consecrated in 1956. Later, the convent increasingly oriented itself towards the way of life and rules of the Beuron Congregation, which Varensell Abbey finally joined in 1982.
