St. Georgenberg-Fiecht Abbey

The origins of St. Georgenberg date back to the mid-10th century when Rathold von Aibling settled here as a hermit and built a first chapel. A community of companions formed, and around the turn of the millennium, the monastery received its first donations. By 1138 at the latest, the community was elevated to a Benedictine abbey, confirmed by Pope Innocent II. Several fires and plague epidemics marked its early history, but the pilgrimage experienced a revival after a miracle of blood around 1310. Following a devastating fire in 1705, exacerbated by lightning and avalanches, the abbey was relocated to the valley, where Fiecht Abbey was built starting in 1706. In the 19th century, the monastery experienced a renewed boom under Abbot Pirmin Pockstaller, before being closed by the Gestapo in 1941. After World War II, the monks returned, and the community joined the Missionary Congregation of St. Ottilien in 1967.

The Abbey of St. Georgenberg-Fiecht is located in Fiecht, a district of Vomp, in the Schwaz district of Tyrol, Austria. The monastic complex is situated at an altitude of approximately 575 meters above sea level.

Today, the Abbey of St. Georgenberg-Fiecht continues to operate as an active monastery. It houses a religious educational center with accommodation options and offers a diverse range of courses for individuals and groups. The pilgrimage site of St. Georgenberg serves as a spiritual center with meditation weeks and pilgrimages.
