Abtei Schweiklberg

Schweiklberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Lower Bavaria, near Passau, is a significant religious center with a long history of missionary work. The Art Nouveau buildings prominently shape the landscape and are protected as a Bavarian architectural monument.
History+
The foundation of Schweiklberg Monastery took place in 1904 by Father Coelestin Maier, who was sent from St. Ottilien. From its inception, the central task of the community was the training and financial support of missionary Benedictines. The monastery buildings and the church were constructed between 1905 and 1925. As early as 1914, Schweiklberg was elevated to the rank of an abbey, and Coelestin Maier became its first abbot. The monastery experienced a disruption in 1941 when it was dissolved by the Gestapo, but after the end of World War II in 1945, the religious community was able to resume its activities. A monk from Schweiklberg, Father Cyprian Mayr, founded the Secular Institute of St. Boniface in 1949.

Schweiklberg Abbey is situated in Vilshofen an der Donau, a town in the Bavarian district of Passau, Germany. Its elevated position on the Schweiklberg makes it a prominent feature in the local skyline.
On site+
The monastic complex, whose buildings underwent extensive renovation between 1999 and 2002, continues to house an active Benedictine community. The Trinity Church, an example of Art Nouveau style, was consecrated in 1925 and its interior was enriched with African carvings in 1998. It features a crypt and two 51-meter-high towers with distinctive clock faces. A Klais organ from 2000 with 87 registers and a six-bell carillon from 1950 are further characteristics of the church. Missionary activities and the support of global missionary projects remain central concerns of the monastery.
