Sayn Abbey

Abbey

The Sayn Abbey, a former Premonstratensian monastery, is located in Bendorf-Sayn, a district of Bendorf in the Mayen-Koblenz region of Rhineland-Palatinate. This historic complex, once a significant spiritual center, is situated on the edge of the Neuwied Basin.

History+

The Sayn Abbey was founded in 1200 by Count Heinrich II of Sayn, who aimed to establish a spiritual center for his county and a burial site for his family. The monastery was settled by Premonstratensian canons from Steinfeld Abbey. In May 1202, the abbey church was solemnly consecrated. Initial conflicts with the nearby Rommersdorf Abbey, due to Premonstratensian rules, were resolved. Sayn Abbey flourished through donations and endowments, as well as a growing pilgrimage culture fostered by a relic of the Apostle Simon Zelotes. In 1228, the monastery achieved the status of an independent abbey. Under Abbot Johann von Berka (1465–1500), Sayn Abbey gained supra-regional importance and served as a model for other monasteries in terms of discipline and order. The dissolution of the monastery occurred in June 1803 as a result of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss.
