Rommersdorf Abbey

Abbey

Rommersdorf Abbey, a former Premonstratensian abbey, represents the oldest establishment of this order in the historic Archdiocese of Trier. Located in Neuwied, Rhineland-Palatinate, it stands as a testament to medieval monastic culture and its evolution.

History+

The monastery was founded around 1114. Initially, Benedictine monks settled there, but they soon left due to the modest conditions. Around 1135, at the instigation of Archbishop Albero of Montreuil of Trier, the abbey was re-settled, this time by Premonstratensians from Floreffe in Belgium. Rommersdorf developed into a significant daughter monastery of Floreffe. The abbey church, consecrated to Saint Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, served as a burial site for noble families of the region, including the Counts of Wied and Isenburg. Under Abbot Bruno of Isenburg-Braunsberg, who served from 1214 to 1236 and was later canonized, the monastery experienced a period of prosperity, during which it was expanded and a hospital was established. Rommersdorf founded several daughter monasteries, including the convents of Wülfersberg and Retters. The Premonstratensians were also involved in the pastoral care of surrounding parishes such as Heimbach, Weis, Gladbach, Neuwied, Irlich, and Engers. In the course of secularization, Rommersdorf Abbey was dissolved in 1803.

Location+

The abbey is situated in the Heimbach-Weis district of Neuwied in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 126 meters above sea level.
