Neresheim Abbey

Neresheim Abbey was founded in 1095 by Count Hartmann I of Dillingen and his wife Adelheid of Winterthur-Kyburg as a collegiate church for Augustinian canons on Neresheim Castle. As early as 1106, the community was transformed into a Benedictine abbey and joined the Hirsau Reform. The first monks came from Petershausen Abbey, and later also from Zwiefalten. In addition to the male community, a convent of nuns also existed until the mid-13th century. For centuries, the abbey was involved in legal disputes over its status, particularly after the extinction of the Dillingen counts in 1258. The monastery, dedicated to Salvator, Mary, Ulrich, and Afra, suffered multiple times throughout its history from fires and wars, including the Schmalkaldic War, the Thirty Years' War, and the Revolutionary Wars. In 1802, Neresheim Abbey was secularized.

Neresheim Abbey is located above the town of Neresheim in the Ostalb district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 592 meters above sea level.

Neresheim Abbey is today an active Benedictine monastery belonging to the Beuron Benedictine Congregation. The impressive monastic complex with its late Baroque church stands as a testament to its long history.
