Königsmünster Abbey

The origins of Königsmünster Abbey date back to 1928, when monks from three Bavarian monasteries established the community. The foundation took place in close cooperation with the city of Meschede, which pledged material support to the Benedictines for the construction of the monastery. In return, the monks took over the municipal rectorate school. An architectural competition in 1930 led to the design of a symmetrical complex, grouped around a church facade. The name Königsmünster, meaning “monastery of Christ the King,” was chosen. The monks consciously placed themselves in the tradition of the former Grafschaft Abbey and adopted its stag antlers as a symbol. In 1932, the monastery gained the status of an independent priory. During the National Socialist era, the complex was confiscated in 1941. After the war, in 1956, the monastery was elevated to an abbey. During this phase, the abbey church was also built, consecrated in 1964 as a “church of peace” and characterized by a modern design language. The community experienced strong growth in the following decades, particularly through engagement in youth work and the opening of the Oase youth guesthouse in 1981. In 2001, the “House of Silence” was inaugurated, whose architecture received particular attention. Today, the monks are involved in various areas, including education, youth work, pastoral care, and crafts.

Königsmünster Abbey is situated in the Hochsauerlandkreis region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 301 meters above sea level.

Königsmünster Abbey is currently an active Benedictine monastery. The monks operate a gymnasium, are involved in youth work, and offer opportunities for retreat and spiritual exercises in the “House of Silence.” Additionally, some brothers are active as missionaries.
