Abdij Rolduc (Abbey)

The monastery of Rolduc was founded in 1104 by the canon Ailbert of Antoing, who had previously left his monastery due to a perceived lack of adherence to the monastic rule. It developed into an abbey of Augustinian Canons. As early as 1106, the Baalsbrugger Mill was built for its supply, followed by the Boerenanseldermolen in 1131. From 1136, Rolduc was under the patronage of the Dukes of Limburg, some of whom were buried in the crypt of the abbey church. The abbey experienced its first flourishing period until around 1250 and founded several daughter monasteries, including the monastery of Marienthal. After a period of decline, exacerbated by the devastation of the Eighty Years' War, the monastery was rebuilt from 1680 onwards and experienced an economic boom through coal mining. In the 18th century, the Moretti Wing and the Rococo library were built. The dissolution of the monastery occurred in 1796.

The Abdij Rolduc is located in the Dutch province of Limburg, on the outskirts of the city of Kerkrade, directly on the border with Germany. The complex is situated at an elevation of approximately 152 meters above sea level.

Today, the majority of the former monastic complex houses a hotel and conference center. A smaller section continues to serve as the Catholic Seminary Groot-Seminarie of the Diocese of Roermond for the training of priests.
